A Thank-you letter to my parents (& all parents who support their children)

Dear Mom, Dear Dad,

Thank you for understanding that travel is the thing that makes me happy. That I don’t do it because I don’t want to be with you, but because I cannot get this wanderlust out of my body.

Thank you for understanding that I’m getting crazy being in one place for too long. That I have to get out to explore other cities, be outdoors, see spectacular new places, try new cuisines and learn about other countries’ cultures and traditions first hand.

Thank you for understanding that traveling educates me and that it makes me grow as a person. Thank you for understanding that I needed to leave the comfort of home to become who I am supposed to be.

You know that I work hard to achieve all this and to be able to live this lifestyle. That I’ve given up all securities: retirement benefits, a steady job, my usual environment of friends and family. But all this, wouldn’t have been possible without your help!

Even though I left home without a return ticket and you could be angry with me for that, you’re not. You’ve never been. You’ve been completely supporting my dreams and are helping me with all the obstacles on the way.

Thank you for your support from the first moment, when I told you about my “crazy” plans. When even I was still insecure whether it is a good idea or not. You helped me to go through all this process and make it a reality.

Thank you for drying tears. Thank you for your advice when I’m down or don’t know what to do. Sometimes all I need are some words of agreement like “yes, you should do that” from you. It doesn’t matter whether I’m 20 or 40 years old. I will always need your help.

You will always be my parents, the ones I trust, the ones I feel the need to be ok with my plans. Deep inside, I know I want to book that flight to a country I’ve never been to. But a word of agreement from you makes the decision so much easier.

Thank you for your positivity, even though you are concerned. I know you are always afraid when I’m traveling somewhere on my own, but you still let me go. Thank you for trusting my gut and knowing that I won’t do anything that brings me in a dangerous situation.

Thank you for always listening to me when something goes wrong and I’m sad or something goes right and I’m full of joy. Thank you for your daily messages, I wouldn’t want nor could live without them. Thank you technology for making that possible. Thank you for being so interested in what I do and thank you that you are part of all this.

Thank you for going on adventures with me and getting to know my way of traveling. I’m happy, I’m not the only travel-addicted person in the family but you love to go traveling as well and that we can share some of the memories. I’m more than happy to take you with me at least once a year and make memories, we’ll never forget.

Thank you for being the best parents I could think of. Without you, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Even though I am not with you, I think of you every single day. I love you!

    Dear Stefkali,
thank you very much for this wonderful letter you ‘ve written. You know we ‘re so proud of you having found your way of life and being able to follow your motto: Don’t dream your life, live your dream. But you also know that it’s sometimes really difficult for us to accept all this. It cuts both ways, on the one hand we know that you’re happy and that is most important to us, on the other hand we miss you so much. But who knows whether we had all these great moments and exciting adventures together without your wanderlust. Probably not. So we’re very thankful as well for all those wonderful moments , exciting holidays and nice people we could get to know because of you.We love you so much.
