Yucatan offers endless kilometers of white beaches with crystal blue water. But which beaches are the best? While spending about six months in the area, I could explore a lot of different beaches. And the following ones are my favorites:
5. Cancun in front of Scuba Cancun
Beaches in Cancun are often very crowded. Hotels were built all along the beach. As I prefer beaches with less people to be able to listen to the waves and to relax, I prefer the beach in front of the dive school Scuba Cancun. You find the beach only a bit further of the ferry station to Isla Mujeres and the Captain Hook ship but it’s already so much quieter. It’s a beach locals go to and you are more likely to find relaxing time here.
4. Isla Holbox
Isla Holbox is becoming more and more popular among the backpackers. It is situated about 3 hours north from Cancun, off the coast from Chiquila. The island is the best place on the whole Yucatan Peninsula to relax. There is not much to do except for lying at the beach, doing some extended beach walks and snorkeling. Take some books with you and enjoy a couple of days on this pretty island.
Akumal is situated between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Snorkel fans will love Akumal. You are very likely to spot a lot of sea turtles and exotic fish here. When getting there, stay right at the entrance first. That’s where you find the turtles. When you’ve seen the turtles but haven’t had enough from snorkeling, go a bit further to the right. That’s where you find the reef and are able to spot more turtles and parrot fish among others.
2. Playa Zebra, Tulum
Every beach in Tulum is amazing. The sand is white, the water crystal clear and it’s definitely one of those paradise beaches. During my two weeks in Tulum, I found my favorite beach to be Playa Zebra. To go there, you have to pass a restaurant. On this beach you can make use of the facilities (awesome sun beds with matresses) for free. There is a bathroom to change and you can order some food or drinks if you get hungry during your beach visit.
1. Playa Norte, Isla Mujeres
Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres is constantly voted among the best beaches worldwide by Tripadvisor. And deservedly so! You cannot stop looking at the sea. It’s simply stunning. And the best: Along the beach you find a lot of beach bars with swings and hammocks to enjoy an ice-cold beer on a hot summer day.
