The last weekend before Christmas is approaching quickly. For me one of the best parts in consideration of Christmas are the Christmas Markets which take place in every small city within Germany. It is not only good fun for kids but for everyone. German Christmas Market offer such a variety of food, crafts stalls and entertainment.
Especially during night time, when the lights are twinkling and the atmosphere gets more festive, it’s time for Glühwein (mulled wine) and some tasty dishes. Seriously, all this is part of Christmas for me and I cannot imagine it without going there at least once.
If you are not from Germany and ask what to eat and drink on a German Christmas Market, read this post to get the answer and find your favorite culinary delight:
1. Hearty food
Germans like to eat bread and I’m no exception. I love to eat all the different kind of breads, the Christmas Markets offer. There are pita breads filled with feta or mozarella cheese and vegetables and herbs or garlic sauce, garlic bread with tomatoes and basil or bread covered with cream, ham and chives among others.
Langos is a Hungarian speciality which is very popular on a German Christmas market. It is again a kind of bread (yes we love bread :P) made out of yeast. It is baked with a lot of grease. In the end it is typically topped with sour cream, tomatoes, cheese and rocket salad.
Of course meat dishes couldn’t be missing on a German Christmas Market. Apart from the typical sausages Bratwurst and Knacker, you can get steak in rolls or roasts like Mutzbraten. Mutzbraten is pork which is slowly roasted and spiced after a special recipe.Christian Hanke
A Knacker (sausage) or a liver almost always comes with green cabbage (Grünkohl) which is a very important part of German Christmas dishes. On the 25th and 26th December, most of the people eat it. That’s why it must also be present on the Christmas Market of course. 2. Sweet food

Crepes can be enjoyed both hearty and sweet on German Christmas Markets. Try crepes with “Kinderschokolade” or “Nutella”!
I love Dutch pancakes or Poffertjes. There is no Christmas season without them. Poffertjes are very small and relatively thick pancakes. They are served with Nutella or advocaat and icing sugar.
You probably already know it. Gingerbread hearts (Lebkuchenherzen) with quotes or nicknames written on it are part of every German festival. Of course Christmas markets offer them with festive slogans.ingrid eulenfan
Mulled wine (Glühwein) is made out of red wine with different spices like cinnemon, cloves, lemon peel and star anise. It is drunk hot but not over 80°C as the alcohol would diminish.
Apart from the original mulled wine, Christmas Markets sell mulled wine with flavours like apple-cinnamon, cherry, blueberry and strawberry among others.
Another typical drink is Lumumba: a hot chocolate with a shot of rum.
The non-alcoholic version of Glühwein is Kinderpunsch (punch for children). Other popular drinks are other warm drinks like hot chocolate or cappuccino.Travis Ezell
