Litchfield National Park is the lesser known little brother of Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory of Australia. From Darwin you can easily do a day trip to Litchfield and explore the area. You can either book a day trip through one of the thousands of tour companies or go there by car. Apparently you are more flexible when you travel by car but as I was alone in Darwin, I decided to book a day trip with Kakadu Dreams.
Firstly the tour stops at the Adelaide River to do a crocodile cruise – the jumping crocodiles. This tour is probably very controversial because they feed the crocodiles with meat so they jump out of the water. I cannot say if I actually liked it or not cause on the one hand it wasn’t natural how they jumped to get the meat. But on the other hand it was so impressive to see how huge they are and how easily and quickly they are able to jump like that. The people who did that tour emphasized that the tour does not harm the crocs.
You then head to the actual park to see some termite mounds which are famous for Litchfield National Park. They are enormous, you cannot imagine that they are built by these little creatures. The mounds are up to 100 years old.
Waterfalls in Litchfield National Park
After seeing a few stunning waterfalls from afar and having lunch, we drove to two waterfall spots where you actually were allowed to swim in. It was amazing to swim there, especially in the lake of the Florence Falls. Two immense and beautiful waterfalls and you can swim towards them or jump from one of the rocks next to it into the water. A unique experience. Not for nothing this place is among the best “natural swimming pools” on earth.
Additional tour information
I booked my tour with Kakadu Dreams. The tour now costs 119 Australian Dollar and includes a hostel/hotel pick-up, the crocodile cruise and a picnic lunch. They pick you up at about 7 am and you’ll be back about 6.30 pm.
